Early Learning and Neighbours and Billy Joel

Om mani padme hum

Greetings, Pilgrim.
Recently I have been listening to Billy Joel and singing along in a haphazard manner. It has been nice. I've also been having to wake up before 7am which has been quite the opposite.

Because I've been getting up earlier I have become re-addicted to Neighbours, a habit that I managed to kick in 2001 when I got a life. This is bad, and it suggests I have lost my life again. I'm trying to get it back but I can't afford to go out every night like I used to. But luckily I'm not as pale as I was then as my skin has actually seen the sun this year. It's all different sides of the same coin.

My last two solo gigs (Mella Yella festival at Bardney outside Lincoln, and The Social in Nottingham) have both been very succesful, and while solo gigs are still my second favourite sort of show (nothing beats the full on autorain head trip) they are better than doing nothing. Here's the set:

  • 99% Sunshine
  • Portable Sun
  • Repeater*
  • We Know How But We Don't Know Why
  • Amethyst
  • Box
  • Cool Your Boots*
  • How Turns The Tide
  • I Will Run After You
  • Alyson*

*Extra songs played only at Mella Yella

Alyson had to be pulled out of the bag as an encore for Mella Yella, and that's only the second encore I've ever done. Unfortunately, it had been so long since I played it that I forgot how it started... but lyrically it was very fitting (all the talk of heat and July coming and going). Nice to play Repeater and Cool Your Boots again too - Repeater hasn't been on an autorain setlist for a good year or so, and Cool... was last heard being played by Hopkirk in 1999.
The Social was a very different beast but the abnormally large crowd (especially for a monday night) was very polite and surprisingly receptive. I quote: "people were putting their beers on the floor to clap" - now that's unusual.

What do you do every night at 10pm now Big Brother's finished?

Some introduction.

I hate these things. They are so self important, especially if - like me - you just sit around watching Big Brother and eating Walker's Sensations. If you're doing something interesting - like travelling - I guess there's a lot more point.
Anyway, I'm bored now.
